Project Northumberland

Scouting is about developing young people. This is precisely what Project Northumberland does, in fact, by delivering Scouting by another name. We aim to raise the achievements, aspirations and future prospects of young people to enable them to make the right choice about their future lives.

Our programme is based on the Explorer Scout Programme, since the young people we work with are generally of Explorer Scout or Network age. The young people who come to us, referred either through school, Connexions, the youth justice system or Job Centre plus, have had no connection with Scouting or any similar organisation and come with no particular expectation.

Taken out of their comfort zone into the world of kayaking, climbing, hiking, camping and outdoor cookery, they immerse themselves into activities which we take for granted - and love it!

Through the Open College Network these young people achieve meaningful nationally recognised qualifications, often the only ones they have ever achieved. Much emphasis is placed on environmental projects: building nature trails, restocking ancient woodlands or developing a new tourist amenity out of railway scrubland.

The whole project is an excellent example of Scouting working with young people who would never normally spend their time with us. By offering worthwhile and stimulating activities to some very challenging individuals, the project helps change young lives for the better.
