Following the success of #YouShape 2017, this year we're celebrating all things #YouShape for a whole month in February. Youth Shaped Scouting takes place all year round, but we're focusing on February to support young people and volunteers to embed this traditional part of Scouting into what we do, and celebrating the amazing examples of Youth Shaped Scouting already taking place around the country.
The outcomes of the month nationally are to:
- Raise the profile and understanding of Youth Shaped Scouting across the organisation.
- Increase the quality and quantity of sectional Youth Shaped Scouting, through Patrol Leader's forums and Sixers meetings for instance, where young people get to express their ideas and gain more leadership opportunities.
- Get Youth Commissioners working collaboratively with their Districts/Counties to embed Youth Shaped Scouting into the following key areas: Programme, Leadership, Management and Governance.
- Work in partnership to shape the future aspirations of The Scout Association.
What's it all about?
#YouShape Month is a platform to empower young people to shape their Scouting experience at a local and national level. During #YouShape Month, we're encouraging all sections to run local activities that will help their young people engage on a national level. Youth Shaped Scouting isn't a new concept; empowering young people to decide, design and implement their own Programme and experiences is already happening around the country. #YouShape month allows us to ensure that this continues and is embedded in every level of the Movement.
Getting involved locally
This year's #YouShape month really focuses on a local impact, enabling young people in colonys, packs, troops and units to enagage and shape their Scouting adventutures. If you're looking for ideas or advice, or want someone to visit your section contact your District Youth Commissioner, or if your District doesnt have one contact the County Youth Commissioners.
This year the #YouShape team have developed some handy #YouShape postcards with fun and enaging activity idea's for all sections. Each district has their own set of postcards available from your District Youth Commissioner or District Commissioner. You can also download and print them on the links below.
We’re asking each Group and Section to pledge to take part in #YouShape and make sure their Young People are listened to. There are three levels of #YouShape involvement, starting at Bronze (for printing off the Pledge and displaying it in your group), all the way up to Gold (which means your group is working in partnership with Young People to make decisions). Think you've achieved your Silver or Gold Award? Email firstname.lastname@example.org and we'll come and present your certificate!
Wear their Necker
To encourage Young People to take up adult volunteer positions in the future, the UK team have launched the Wear their Necker project. This is all about getting Young People to shadow Leaders to see what the role involves and understand how they could do the role. This could be as simple as a Scout running the evening for the night, to an Explorer shadowing a District Commissioner. Why not give a Young Person the challenge of being your GSL for the day?
Remember Youth Shaped Scouting should always be fun! It's all about Young people working in partnership with adults to shape their Scouting adventure. It's a two way thing and something we should celebrate together!
